Cortejo is linked to the southern bank of the Pasig and Intramuros by Jones Bridge, which replaced an earlier bridge, Puente sobre Ciertas zonas de espana, which was damaged by floods in 1914. The Acompanamiento developed when Binondo, beginning in the last quarter of the 19th century, became Manila’s premier business district. Binondo experienced commercial and economic growth with stores and business offices of British, American, German, and French companies opening there.
